By Ranjith Soysa - Melbourne | The US elections proved that the US electorate desires major changes in American foreign policy as the President Bush and his team on many an instance miserably failed to comprehend the aspirations of the world community at large. In many countries, the image of the USA is in tatters as the local people have felt that the US policy makers were attempting to shape the events in various countries to suit the USA's grand plan.

In Sri Lanka, the US Ambassador Blake along with a few European representatives have been making noises for sometime favouring the separatist forces. They have not only nurtured INGOs and supported NGOs financially but also given undue recognition to create dissension socially and politically.

Some of the statements of the Ambassador Blake on Sri Lanka’s internal issues are simply provocative evoking the memories of Ugly American envoys who were in developing countries when USA was the supreme power. Blake, clearly over stepped his position when he made his famous statement in South India a few months ago almost challenging Sri Lanka’s elected government.

When one examines Condoleeza Rice’s comments at the award ceremony for 2008 Human Rights and Democracy Achievement about the human rights situation in the East it is clear that Blake and his team are instrumental in highlighting the 'rapid deterioration' but have been very selective reporting or appreciating the determination of the Sri Lanka President and his administration to liberate Sri Lanka from the clutches of the world’s most ruthless terrorist group.

Blake and his followers ignore how Pilliayan chose democratic way instead of relying on armed violence. While USA and the West have left no stone unturned in attempting to remove Mugabe for violation of democratic principles, Blake, the American Ambassador and his Western colleagues needs Pilliayan who was a member of a terrorist group to be a Sunday school teacher overnight.

Blake and his team’s role is indeed a threat to Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan people supporting the Government’s effort to defeat the LTTE., should relearn history how some US Ambassadors acted as king makers by closely associating with the opposition politicians, INGOs and representatives of vested interests in many African. Latin American and Asian countries.

A message should be sent to Blake that he should stop blackening the image of the USA by attempting a regime change in Sri Lanka. If USA is not interested in even thinking of creating another Afghanistan by encouraging separatists in Sri Lanka the President Elect Barrack Obama and his new administration should seriously consider to appoint a person to Sri Lanka in keeping with the cherished principles of international diplomacy and American values.
