AFP | HORSHAM (ENGLAND): The world is working together in a way "without precedent in modern times" to tackle the credit crisis, US Treasury Secretary
Tim Geithner said today after a G20 finance ministers' meeting.

"We are seeing the world move together at a speed and on a scale without precedent in modern times," he said.

"We have a very broad basis consensus globally now on the need to act aggressively to restore growth and a commitment to move together to address this evolving crisis."

The run-up to the summit was marked by splits between the United States, which wants coordinated moves to jumpstart recovery by pumping more money into world economies, and Europe, which broadly favours regulatory reform to tackle the credit crunch.

The final communique today made no firm commitment on stimulus moves despite the US calls.

Asked about the issue, Geithner said there had been much discussion among ministers on stimulus.

"The world is with us on this and I think... the most important thing in the communique is a clear statement to do what's necessary to keep at it until we get recovery back on track."

On regulation, Geithner said: "We must establish a much clearer form of oversight and clear rules of the game more evenly enforced across the international financial system."
